Chinese New Year
Posted 13th March 2026
This term, our school community came together to celebrate the vibrant and meaningful traditions of Chinese New Year, one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture. The celebrations were led by Mrs Kirkham, Head of MFL, who delivered a series of engaging assemblies to all year groups, introducing students to the history, values, and traditions linked to the Lunar New Year.
In her assemblies, Mrs Kirkham highlighted the significance of welcoming a new lunar cycle and explained that the Horse symbolises energy, determination, and progress. She also encouraged students to appreciate the cultural traditions that families around the world cherish at this time of year, including those celebrated on our doorstep in Manchester’s Chinatown. Students learned about symbolic foods, the meaning behind red decorations, and how Chinese communities mark the occasion.
To deepen students’ cultural understanding and spark their creativity, this year also saw the launch of our Chinese New Year Competition. Students from across the school took part with great enthusiasm, producing an incredible variety of artistic and imaginative entries. From intricate dragon designs and lantern artwork to 3D models of Chinese fish symbolising wealth, as well as impressive posters showcasing Chinese culture, the standard of work was truly outstanding.
Mrs Kirkham shared her delight at the quality and passion shown:
“I am incredibly proud of our students’ creativity, dedication, and engagement throughout this project. Their enthusiasm reflects the joy of learning about and celebrating different cultures.”
The competition not only showcased individual talent but also demonstrated our students’ curiosity and respect for global traditions—an important part of our school’s commitment to cultural enrichment and inclusive learning.
We would like to congratulate all participants and thank everyone who contributed to making our Chinese New Year celebrations so memorable!
